Volition Turns 2 – Reviewing What I Got Right (and Wrong) From Year 1

14/06/2025

As Volition turns two, I wanted to reflect on the goals I set in year one and how I actually did against them. Some wins, some learning curves—and definitely a few laughs at myself along the way.

“Family > Work needs to be remembered!”
WFH flexibility has been a game-changer, especially since Raffey arrived. I took a full month off when he was born, then went down to 3.5 days a week so Claire could finish her counselling course. Still guilty of doom-scrolling LinkedIn during playtime—but hey, I’m trying.

“Any BD tips are always appreciated.”
2024 was way busier than 2023. The best part? Clients from 2023 came back when they were ready to hire. It showed that deep market convos stick. Didn’t need to do much outreach this year—but what I did, worked.
Score: 8/10

“Work smarter, not harder!”
Still torn between two AI notetakers. One integrates with my CRM/ATS but isn’t great. The better one doesn’t integrate, so I’m exploring Zapier. Turns out I’m still a tech magpie.
Score: 5/10

“Don’t get fobbed off so much!”
Moved to Worthing and still didn’t meet my accountant. That said, I’ve pushed back more and stayed on top of VAT and filings.
Score: 5/10

“Let go of that ego.”
This one hit home. I got a PT, dropped a few pounds, and yes—I can now do Bulgarian Split Squats (12 reps!). Having a baby means living in the moment… because nappies don’t change themselves.
Score: 7/10

“Professional goals:”
I wasn’t sure whether to grow Volition through hiring—but I’ve now built a decision framework. I’ll only grow if it benefits:

  1. Me & my family
  2. The person I hire
  3. Our clients
    More on that soon.
    Score: 8/10

“Marketing:”
Didn’t read much (or write much). Writing content in 2024 felt tough—I shared most of my best stuff in 2023. I’ve added This Is Marketing by Seth Godin to my 2025 list, but I’m not pressuring myself.
Score: 3/10

“Product offering:”
Didn’t sell any retainers. In most cases, I ended up saying:
“You don’t know us yet—let’s work together first, then look at a retainer.”
Business was good, so no regrets, but the option is still open for any clients reading:

Looking ahead to 2025
Lots more to come. Big thanks to everyone who’s been part of the journey—clients, candidates, and collaborators. Your support means the world. Here’s to making year three even better.
